Tanzanite was discovered in 1967
FACT
Legend says that is was Massai caddle herders that first discovered tanzanite, some 30 years ago after a fire caused by lightning burned areas in Tanzania. The herders noticed that brown zoiscite crystals had turned a deep blue-purple due to the heat from the fire. Tanzanite is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017.

Founded in 1967, tanzanite is commercially mined in only Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Africa. Tanzanite is said to be found, mined and depleted all in one generation. The chance of finding tanzanite elsewhere is less than 1 in a million which is why people refer to tanzanite as a geological phenomenon.

Color is the most important factor to consider when grading Tanzanite?

The finest color can range from a Blueish violet to a violetish blue. You want a gem with deep color saturation. Avoid pale and grayish colors. The more saturated the color of the stone, the more valuable. Saturation and intensity of color together are key indicators of the stones value along with carat weight.
